CAMPUS + Technology

Prior to developing
the facilities at IUON, the founders consulted with their advisory committee and visited a number of the most esteemed nursing schools in the U.S. Based on their findings, they were able to incorporate into the IUON campus design the best attributes of these U.S. nursing schools. The Administration firmly believes that IUON will be a model for all other schools to follow in the future. From a wireless campus, to the use of state-of-the-art equipment, technologically advanced simulation labs, and the modern technology-based library and learning resource center, the investment IUON has made in developing the ideal nursing school of the 21st century is quite evident.

The innovative 210-seat auditorium is equipped with audiovisual tools that enhance the quality of education and allow faculty members to present critical visual information in the most pedagogically creative mode available. The auditorium is outfitted with plasma screen monitors, LCD projectors, an Elmo presenter, and additional apparatus designed to enhance the faculty's presentation to the students.

Students are urged to bring their laptop computers to class, since the entire facility is wireless. Even student tables are wired - making the entire campus computer-accessible.

Each of the
two modern, 150-seat multipurpose laboratories is designed for the next generation of nurses. As the name indicates, these labs are used for multiple purposes including: anatomy/physiology, chemistry, and microbiology. Both laboratories are equipped with cutting-edge technology. Audiovisual equipment, utilized by the faculty for teaching purposes, includes high-resolution monitors, Elmo presenters, a computer for PowerPoint presentations, and an enhanced audio system. The projection microscopes are connected to the monitors, enabling faculty members to present visually important detailed microscopic and pathological images to the entire class. In addition, the anatomy lab is outfitted with a significant collection of anatomical models for student use. All of the laboratories are also fully equipped with the traditional equipment and supplies found in the best teaching labs in the U.S.

The wireless and networked learning environment on campus is a key component to ensure that IUON students are well prepared to complete the educational process. The furniture in the library and auditorium are installed with modules, allowing students to plug in their laptop computers. Students can access the wireless network and connect directly to the Internet and campus intranet practically anywhere on campus.

Rigorous coursework demands concentrated attention and the resources to enable students to learn efficiently. The IUON campus boasts technological advances on the cutting-edge of health care instruction. Utilization and understanding of educational software and auto-tutorial learning will be emphasized throughout the learning process, including those programs created by faculty members.

The two skills laboratories are equipped with the latest in computerized simulated models. These models mimic virtually every illness, providing students with a clinical experience that many other schools throughout the world are not yet able to supply. Nineteen (19) patient simulators are available for student learning. These state-of-the-art computerized models enable faculty members to provide simulations that challenge and test students' clinical and decision-making skills during realistic patient-care scenarios. The laboratories were designed with the functionality and appearance of hospital wards or clinics.

The administrative and faculty offices are located on the second floor of the administration building, making them extremely accessible to the student body. The campus also contains several classrooms designed for smaller and more intimate classes, seminars, group study, and closer interaction with faculty members. The University also has a campus bookstore and café. snack bar; a planned cafeteria is under development.

Library & Learning Resource Center

The Anne Ross Library and Learning Resource Center (LRC) is is designed to support the educational learning process. It has an impressive collection of books, journals, and periodicals – surpassing many U.S. nursing school libraries. In addition to nursing education, the collection provides the basics for a firm liberal arts and science education. The library also contains audiovisual equipment suitable for a variety of viewing and listening formats.

The Director and
all support staff are skilled in the areas of library sciences , as well as assisting students in locating the tools and resources they require. The library team provides suggestions for resource utilization; members are trained in working with student needs. Students may request research, reference, or equipment use assistance.

The LRC offers students an impressive body of educational software and online databases, providing the resources vitally necessary for the proper training of today's nurses. Students can utilize their own laptop computers, or those provided by IUON, within the LRC for educational software operation or Internet access. There are currently 36 computers in the LRC for use by students. We will be expanding the LRC and adding additional computers in the very near future.

The facility itself was designed to allow students to study in a peaceful atmosphere, with a view of the Caribbean Ocean that is conducive to tranquil learning.

Technology Support

The Information and Technology Services (ITS) department in St. Kitts provides an advanced computer and communications network for accessing information systems and computer-based tools. ITS services are extended to all students, faculty, and staff of IUON. All ITS department staff members are professionally trained, experienced, and dedicated to providing responsive, comprehensive end-user support for University-supported personal computer (PC) hardware, software, and peripheral services, in addition to shared database systems and multimedia equipment. All students have access to the Internet and are provided with their own email accounts.

U.S. Affiliates

The final year of instruction is completed at a U.S affiliated college. IUON students are accepted as transfer students and become part of the U.S affiliates student body. They are subject to all the regulations, and enjoy the same rights and privileges as all nursing students.

St. Kitts Campus

Administration Building 2 copyIUON's campus is
located on the island of St. Kitts in the Eastern Caribbean. St. Kitts is the regularly used nickname of St. Christopher and was settled in 1623 as Britain's first colony in the West Indies. In 1983, the Federation of St. Kitts & Nevis gained independence. It is now recognized within the British Commonwealth. This two-island nation, in the Leeward Islands, has a distinct style and culture. Although the British influence is still easily recognized, it is obvious that St. Kitts is home to a diverse multicultural society.

St. Kitts is led by a Prime Minister. The main language is English. There is a population of 36,000, with a literacy rate of 98%. The capital of St. Kitts is Basseterre. The 68 square miles enjoy a pleasant year- round climate. The average temperature is 79 degrees, low humidity, no rainy season and trade winds that help keep the island cool. Further details regarding living in St. Kitts and a description of campus buildings, technology and resources may be found elsewhere on this site.
